Conservation Council Public Forum Packs Leonard Good Community Center

OGDEN, Iowa—The Boone County Conservation Council held a special meeting Tuesday night with a large crowd at the Leonard Good Community Center in Ogden. The majority of those present were there due to a report that the Conservation Council was closing the Don Williams golf course and clubhouse. Marilyn Jordan, current chair of the Conservation Council, said that was not the case. The golf course and the clubhouse will be open this year. This prompted the follow-up question “Well, what about next year”.
The County Conservation Board is responsible for nine properties in Boone County. The majority of revenue generated by County Conservation comes from the Don Williams Recreation Area, whether it is from the golf course, camping, cabin and shelter rentals, or dock fees. All revenue then goes to the county’s general fund. Many thought that all dollars raised for the golf course should stay with the golf course, but that never happened. The budget recently passed by Boone County Supervisors contains the county’s conservation budget. Supervisors approve an allowance for county conservation and these dollars are to be used for all operations, including the salaries of five full-time employees as well as seasonal employees.
In recent years, projects have included campground upgrades and upgrades. A number of grants have been received to offset the costs of these improvements. Several grants and pledges have been directed to an extension of the High Trestle Trail at Swede Point Park, an extension of the trail set to begin this year.
The Conservation Board is also facing a project to improve the water main from Ogden to Don Williams. The current pipe has experienced several leaks resulting in significant water loss.
Since Tuesday’s meeting, a clubhouse replacement project appears to be a fairly high priority.
The next regular meeting of the Boone County Conservation Board will be Monday, April 11 at 6:00 p.m. and will be held in the 4th Floor Boardroom of the Boone County Courthouse.
