Delta Air Lines cuts Cleveland-Salt Lake City route; United cancel Akron-Canton from Washington Dulles

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Delta Air Lines has cut its Cleveland-Salt Lake City route, the latest victim of fluctuating travel demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Another victim: United Airlines in March cuts flights between Akron-Canton airport and Washington Dulles international airport.

The route reductions are the latest adjustments made by an airline industry that continues to suffer from fluctuating travel demand and staff shortages.

The elimination of CLE in Salt Lake City is part of a larger withdrawal at the Utah airport, which is popular with skiers, as well as connecting passengers to other destinations in the Western States. United and Asia. Non-stop routes from Columbus and Pittsburgh have also been cut.

A Delta spokesperson suggested the Cleveland route would return, but could not provide a timeline. “We continue to assess our network and make changes based on customer demand, as we have done throughout the pandemic,” said Drake Castaneda, Delta’s media relations manager.

The route ends on January 4.

United’s decision to end service between Akron-Canton and Dulles is also part of a larger network move, with several smaller airports losing routes to the Virginia suburban international airport.

In a Senate hearing earlier this month, United CEO Scott Kirby cited the pilot shortage as one of the reasons for the growing number of cutbacks at small airports.

“There has been a looming pilot shortage over the last decade in the United States, and through COVID it’s become a real pilot shortage,” Kirby said, according to The Points Guy. “So all of us, especially our regional partners, just don’t have enough planes to fly. We have almost 100 planes actually grounded right now – regional planes – because there aren’t enough pilots to fly them, which means we can’t get to the ground right now. all the small communities that we would like. It’s really about not having enough pilots.

United spokesperson Maddie King made the statement about the route reduction in Akron-Canton: “We frequently review our route offerings and plan to add service when market conditions improve. . “

CAK flights to Washington Dulles will end on March 3. United will continue to serve Chicago O’Hare from Akron-Canton.
