SALT LAKE CITY – Real Salt Lake will host the Portland Timbers this coming Sunday in a game that has massive implications for both sides.
For Real Salt Lake, three points against Portland would cement a playoff position. While a loss for Portland and the Timbers could miss the playoffs. Currently, Real Salt Lake is one point off a playoff spot, while Portland is two points clear of Real Salt Lake in sixth in the West.
A draw or loss for Real Salt Lake against Portland will conclude the 2022 season for RSL.
Remarkably, Real Salt Lake are just three points behind fourth-placed LA Galaxy. As is often the case with Real Salt Lake, the season will be determined on MLS decision day.
Last year on Decision Day, Real Salt Lake stole three points on the road against Sporting Kansas City after Damir Kreilach found the back of the net in the 95th minute to win 1-0, and then qualified for the playoffs.
This year, Real Salt Lake will look to repeat similar events.

However, this year RSL will be without leader Damir Kreilach who is still recovering from a back injury that limited his season to just five games. Additionally, striker Bobby Wood will also be unavailable for the hosts as he remains unavailable following mid-season kidnapping surgery.
The injury news comes as no surprise to RSL fans given the minimal impact Kreilach and Wood have had on this season. Instead, the club will look to rely on Jefferson Savarino, Sergio Córdova, Anderson Julio and remaining attacking threats to ensure Real Salt Lake scores more goals than Portland throughout the 90 minutes.
Portland enters the game without having won a game in their previous two matches. Most recently, the Timbers lost 2-1 to LAFC at Providence Park after a 95th-minute winner by LAFC winger Denis Bouanga.
Portland is full of quality players such as the Chará brothers, Dairon Asprilla, Sebastián Blanco and Jarosław Niezgoda.
RSL and Portland have faced each other once this season. On April 23, RSL and Portland ended in a scoreless draw at Providence Park. Although a year ago, it was the Timbers who swept the RSL three games to nil throughout the regular season and in the Western Conference Finals.
Real Salt Lake’s last win against the Timbers came in 2020 when Kyle Beckerman was still a member of the RSL dressing room.
