On Tuesday evening, September 6, Rowan’s volleyball team beat Muhlenberg College, in a dominating 3-1 performance in their home opener.

Going into the game with a 4-0 record, it would be another early season test for the Profs to test their focus and determination. They continued to build chemistry in preparation for the season-ending push.

Senior Jackie Camponelli had a few serves that changed momentum, leading to the teachers walking away at the end of each game. Camponelli credits ‘service reception ladder’ training exercise that prepares her mentally and physically for the punctual service. She also thanked her teammates who provide the spark they need, especially Courtney Rhoden.

“His constant cheering and fun celebrations keep the spirits up all season long,” Camponelli said.

Another prof with an outstanding performance was Natalie Ogden, as she stole the show by reaching 1,000 career digs.

Recording a game-high 13 digs, Ogden provided consistent defensive protection for the Profs. Ogden credits much of her consistent success to the experience she has gained over the years.

As Rowan took the win, they dropped the first set to Muhlenberg. Head coach Deana Jespersen spoke after the game about her team’s ability to stay resilient and bounce back when pressure is put on them.

“I try to instill the ‘goldfish’ mindset for our team and staff as we stay grounded,” coach Jespersen said. “Win or lose, they have a short-term memory and focus on what they can improve. We actually have a goldfish drawn on our locker board for friendly reminders.

Rowan will now host a tri-match on Saturday, September 10, starting at 11 a.m., against Widener University. Pride then takes over Catholic University at 1 p.m., followed by Cardinals and Professors closing it at 3 p.m.
