Above / For months customers of Schmaltz Delicatessen have been anticipating moving day when the well-known restaurant moves to a larger space at 3011 Ogden Avenue in Lisle.
Moving trucks were in front of Schmaltz Delicatessen at Tower Crossings on Wednesday January 26, but PN columnist and independent business owner Mike Cooper said he was unable to take photos as the parking lot was filled with cars. Cooper and his wife, Pam, own the Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services, also located in Tower Crossings at the corner of Ogden Avenue and Naper Boulevard. He knew Thursday would be another day.
Early the next morning, Cooper snapped some photos and volunteered to take a follow-up photo at the new commercial site around the corner at 3011 Ogden Avenue in Lisle, just over the border from Naperville, where the contractors are busy preparing new interiors. construction for the popular charcuterie.
As this story continues, after more than 17 years, Sunday January 23 was the last day for Schmaltz Delicatessen to serve customers at its Naperville location. The new owners plan to open the new Lisle location in February.
Cooper is delighted that Schmaltz Deli’s new location remains close to his business. This way, he will continue to enjoy the flavors of the great deli choices on the menu.
“I used to enjoy Boston Common’s No. 2: Homemade Rare Roast Beef with Horseradish Sauce, Lettuce, and Tomato on Pumpernickel Bread,” Cooper said. “And, a bunch of bagel chips…”
A recent Schmaltz Deli Facebook post by Schmaltz owner Howard Bender said, “We served great groceries. Looking back, I can’t begin to describe how proud I am…so many amazing employees and amazing customer support.
“The charcuterie is now in the hands of another family, it’s time for it to be the Goodmans’ legacy. I’m confident they’ll make it better than ever!
“Bravo to all of you who have made Schmaltz successful. Thanks thanks thanks. Can’t wait to be a customer at the New Schmaltz Deli just down the street in Lisle!
Meanwhile, the owners of Schmaltz Deli are encouraging fans of their pickles, bagels and bagel fries to visit Schmaltz Express at 390 W. Front Street in Wheaton during the new extended hours to get a “Schmaltz fix, and fast!”
When completed, the new Schmaltz Deli location will offer an expanded dining room, larger deli retail store, drive-thru, outdoor patio and private dining room.
Progress updates are posted on their website, www.schmaltzdeli.com.
Since 1990, Tower Crossings has been located at the northeast corner of Ogden Avenue and Naper Boulevard, almost on the Naperville border as it leads east to Lisle and north to I- 88 and Wheaton. Tower Crossings is also less than a mile from the newly opened Costco warehouse in the Ogden Mall.
One more thing…PN’s favorite menu items included the #31 Chicken Wrap and the #39 Half-Stuffed Turkey Pretzel along with the occasional good company we shared at lunchtime meetings at the Schmaltz Deli. Long live continued success!
