Spartans Open Season Welcoming Southern Utah

San José State Record in 2020: 7-1, 6-0 West Mountain. The Spartans won the Mountain West Football Championship by defeating Boise State, 34-20, at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, and lost to Ball State, 34-13, at the Offerpad Arizona Bowl in Tucson, Arizona.

The Spartans finished No.24 in the latest Associated Press and Amway / USA Today coaches poll and No.22 in the college football playoff standings.

Southern Utah record in spring 2021: 1-5, 1-5 Big Sky Conference. The Thunderbirds finished seventh in the Big Sky Conference standings and are looking to end a three-game losing streak since the end of the spring 2021 season.

Series history: San Jose State leads the series, 2-0. Either way, Southern Utah was the Spartans’ third game of the season and a home opener.

San Jose State won the most recent game, 16-11, on September 18, 2010, for their only win of the season under first-year head coach Mike MacIntyre. The Spartans opened 2010 in # 1-Alabama and # 11-Wisconsin. Current Spartan Football Coach Brent Brennan was the San Jose State wide receivers coach that season. Demario Warren of southern Utah was in his third season as the Thunderbirds defensive back coach.

The Spartans won the team’s first meeting, 47-7, on September 16, 2000 after facing # 1-Nebraska and Stanford in consecutive road games.

Play-by-play radio coverage: KTRB (860 AM, Fremont) will broadcast the game from Southern Utah. Justin allegri calls play-by-play. Kevin Richardson provides commentary. The Southern Utah broadcast begins at 6:30 p.m. PT with a pre-game show. The broadcast is also available on the TuneIn app.

KSJS (90.5 FM, San José) will also broadcast the game from southern Utah. Airtime is 6:45 p.m. PT with a pre-game show.

Television: The CBS Sports Network will broadcast the game from southern Utah. Jason Knapp calls it play-by-play. Aaron Murray is the analyst. Amanda Guerra is the side reporter. The CBS Sports Network broadcast begins at 7:00 p.m. PT.

Consecutive Winning Seasons Quest: Following last year’s 7-1 record, San Jose State is looking to win back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992.

Best 20-game stretch since 2012 and 2013: In San Jose State’s last 20 games spanning the 2019 and 2020 seasons, the Spartans are 12-8. San Jose State was 5-7 in 2019 and 7-1 in 2020.

The last time the Spartans had a better 20-game duration was in 2012 and the first seven games of 2013 when San Jose State was 15-5. The Spartans were 11-2 in 2012 and 4-3 in 2013 after a 51-44 home win over Wyoming.
