Even old timers know a new ‘vibe’ in town when they see it, and Provo’s new Latter-Day Café is one you won’t want to miss; especially those who like the flavor of coffee.

The story begins with cafe entrepreneur and co-owner Michael Draper, who converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of 17.

Draper, from Washington, DC, said he studied physics in college. But at $ 5,000 a semester, he said, he didn’t see the end of it or needed it.

His two brothers also converted to the LDS Church and went on a mission. One of them loved the Book of Mormon so much that he changed his name to Ether, a prophet of the book, according to Draper.

“They gave me the scriptures and I had a ‘Joseph Smith’ experience,” Draper said. “After reading it, I knew the Book of Mormon was true.

Later, Draper was called to serve in the Salt Lake City Mission in Utah, then ended up at the Ogden Mission when it was established.

All the while, Draper said he misses drinking his twice-weekly caramel cappuccinos and McDonald’s coffee.

After his assignment, Draper did not return to college; he started to turn the houses around. It was great for a while, he said, then COVID-19 hit and its tenants weren’t paying the rent. So he sold his investments and returned home to Raleigh, North Carolina, where his parents now live.

“I’ve never stopped running out of coffee,” Draper said. He tried the coffee substitutes they gave investigators to help them quit the coffee habit like the Barley Cup.

In fact, he tried 31 different versions of coffee substitutes, including 25 made from barley. He has tried everything from Pero to Postum.

“They all tasted like hot garbage,” Draper admitted. “All but one.”

This one could be salvation for many people who enjoy their Frappuccinos, Lattes, Cappuccinos, and just plain coffee but choose to live the Word of Wisdom or just have better health.

The Word of Wisdom is a law of health for the physical and spiritual benefit of the children of God, according to current information from the LDS Church.

“It includes instructions on what foods are good for us and what substances to avoid,” according to the church’s information. Coffee is one such substance, and recently the church has added any drink with coffee as a base such as a cappuccino or a Frappuccino or a latte.

Draper said he began to extract, refine, and test the inner part of the capomo, or the Mayan nut, which is the center of a peach-like fruit. It’s healthier and less acidic than regular coffee, he said.

Traditional coffee is very acidic, harmful to the environment, increases cortisol production, and contains diuretics as well as caffeine, Draper said.

Draper’s Coffee Substitute is caffeine-free, gluten-free, pH-balanced, has a low glycemic index, and contains several antioxidants, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, calcium, potassium, folate, iron, zinc, fiber and other vitamins and minerals which are healthy for the body.

The capomo seed grows in Guatemala and all the tropical forests of Central America. Draper said pregnant women in this region eat the capomo plant to give them strength and healthier babies.

When he was done, Draper said he had found the answer to his desires.

“I had invented the best fake coffee in the world,” Draper said. “When I give my drink to someone, they sip it and have a coffee aftertaste; they love it. “

Inside the cafe of the last days in Provo. The company serves fake coffee that tastes like the real thing.

With Utah County having around 82% LDS, there’s no better place to try Draper’s new beer than in the heart of “mormondom.”

“I moved to Utah, bought a food truck, and two days before I opened I was hit by a dump truck and it totaled the food truck.”

Draper said he took the insurance money from the accident and opened the Latter-Day Café. It was September 1st. It doubled its attendance each opening week.

It helps that this week was National and International Coffee Week and that the LDS general conference is this weekend. Draper says he’s not sure what he could call his different drinks, but one of them must definitely be Mo-Joe, he said.

Draper’s logo was inspired by Starbucks and features a figure similar to the Angel Moroni, as seen on ancient LDS temple spiers and an ancient church logo. Rather than having a trumpet or a horn in their bag, the character drinks from a cup.

“At first I was afraid someone would take offense, but the response was overwhelming,” said Draper.

So if you don’t make Starbucks or Dutch Brothers coffees, Latter-Day Café just might be your flavor.

Draper says if you need a caffeine boost, it comes in four levels. He uses pure caffeine. A level one boost is like adding 12 ounces of Mountain Dew. Level two is the same caffeine as a traditional 8-ounce cup of coffee. Level three is the same caffeine as a 5-hour 20-ounce energy drink. And the level four caffeine boost is like adding 16 ounces of a Bang Energy drink.

The coffee offers several flavors to add to your fake coffee, from raspberry to white chocolate to Irish cream. Drinks are served hot or cold. They also sell cookies and croissant sandwiches.

The Café des Dernieres Jours offers monthly specials. In October there will be croissants or cookies with a drink purchased before 10 in the morning. Church missionaries get $ 1 off drinks, but if they bring in an investigator, they all get the drink free.

“We even invite them to sit in a corner and teach the Word of Wisdom,” Draper said.

This Saturday, Draper is planning a LDS General Conference Kickoff Party the morning before the start at 10 a.m. There will be a television handy to watch the conference in the cafe.

The Latter-Day Café is located at 600 N. 495 East in the collective restaurant The Hut. The store is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday and from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It is closed on Sundays.
