Utah Downs State of Utah, 2-1

LOGAN, Utah – The Utah women’s soccer team beat the Utah State Aggies, 2-1, Thursday night at the Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field. Courtney talbot scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute of the game, bringing the Utes to their second consecutive victory.

Utah (5-3-1) came out and outscored the Aggies 13-8 in the game. The Utes scored goals by Taliana Kaufusi and Courtney talbot. Goalkeeper Chelsea peterson made three saves in the game. Utah controlled possession 58 percent against Utah State (6-1-1).

“I’m proud our team found a way to win against a quality Utah State team today,” said the head coach. Hideki Nakada noted. “There’s a reason they were undefeated going into this game and they certainly made it tough for us. We had to be better at maintaining possession and finding open outlets to play out of their pressure as the game was getting too transitional. To our liking. Two special goals saw us win the game today and again, all credit goes to our players for finding a way to get the job done. “

Utah came out looking to score early in the contest as Haley Farrar and Courtney talbot had two quality looks. Farrar’s shot missed, while Talbot’s shot was saved by the Aggies goaltender.

Once Utah State attacked, Kami Warner pulled in a shot on goal for the Aggies, but Peterson made the save, keeping the game goalless.

Anna escobedo looked to give the Utes the lead at the end of the first half. She found a loose bullet and landed a shot on target which was saved. Utah and Utah State did not score a halftime goal.

The Utes’ offensive pressure was back in action early in the second half. Just under two minutes after half-time, Talbot landed a shot that missed the goal. Eden jacobsen followed two minutes later by a shot that went wide to the right.

In the 50th minute, Utah broke the tie without a goal. With a loose bullet floating around the top of the Aggies box, Kaufusi circled the bullet and found space for a shot. She went to the upper right corner and scored, giving Utah the lead 1-0.

Utah State responded immediately and two minutes later Karstyn Peterson found Ashley Cardozo for a goal, which tied the game at 1-1.

Utah continued to put pressure on the Aggies goaltender as Jacobsen and Farrar shot on target. Peterson kept the Aggies off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game as she made two saves in the second half.

In the 83rd minute of the game, Aggies Alex Day was called for a foul just outside the box. Talbot lined up to take the free kick for Utah, and she fired a shot on goal that bounced off the crossbar and rebounded into the net, putting Utah in the lead, 2-1.

The Utes didn’t allow the Aggies another look for the remainder of the game and came away with a 2-1 victory.

The Utes return to action on Friday, September 2, when they travel to Stanford, Calif., To face Stanford in the Utes Pac-12 opener. The first kick is set at 7 p.m. MT.
