(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) The FrontRunner commuter train arrives at the new Vineyard station in Utah County on Friday, August 12, 2022. The new station, which is part of the 83-mile FrontRunner alignment between Ogden and Provo, is in downtown Vineyard, near the Vineyard Connector overpass and Utah Lake.

The first new FrontRunner station in a decade debuted Friday in Vineyard, giving Utah County transit riders another option for taking the commuter train.

Vineyard Station, located in downtown Vineyard, marks the 15th station in the train’s 83-mile service area that stretches from Ogden to Provo.

“We are excited to provide FrontRunner service to the growing Vineyard City community,” Utah Transit Authority Administrator Jeff Acerson said in a press release. “The new station will help increase mobility, connection and economic opportunity for everyone who lives here or visits this beautiful region.”

With a booming population of more than 14,000, Vineyard has ranked as Utah’s fastest-growing city — by percentage — exploding nearly 9,000 percent since 2010. The place, built on the site of the former Geneva steelworks, had less than 150 inhabitants by a dozen years ago.

Utah lawmakers approved a $5.6 million contribution for the new station at 130 E. Market St., while the UTA paid nearly $17 million.

At a Friday morning ceremony marking the station’s premiere, Utah Governor Spencer Cox said increasing transit ridership was the single most important step in removing polluting cars from Interstate 15 and other routes.

“We can’t keep adding lanes to I-15,” Cox said. “It’s impossible, so we have to think bigger and bolder, and that’s what we’re doing here today.”

Christopher Stout, co-founder of the Utah Transit Riders Union, welcomed the addition of FrontRunner, but said his group wanted it to be served by more bus connections and more frequent train service throughout. of the day.

“Obviously,” he said, “half an hour in the morning and an hour during the day probably isn’t enough, especially in Utah County.”

He said he wanted to see the FrontRunner service the station every half hour throughout the day.
