Washington opens baseball series against Utah with loss


Preston Viltz hit a two-run homer, but Washington opened its penultimate baseball streak of the season with a 7-3 loss to Utah at Husky Ballpark.

Washington will face Utah on Saturday and Sunday before traveling to Pullman to end the season in Washington state next weekend.

• Shane Jamisonwas 2 for 4 with three RBIs as Seattle U (16-30, 10-21 WAC) tied a series by visiting Utah Valley State (9-45, 7-28) with a victory of 7-2.

Minor leagues

• Carter trays was 2 for 5 with a homerun and three RBIs as the visiting Everett AquaSox broke a three-game losing streak beating the Spokane Indians 8-6. Bins, which also doubled, and Jack Larsen hit two back-to-back solo home runs in the ninth.

• Darren mccaughan scored six runs and walked two in six working innings for the Tacoma Rainiers, taking the win in a 6-1 win over the visiting Round Rock Express. Cal Raleigh was 2 for 3 with a solo homerun and a double for Tacoma.

College basketball

• Eastern Washington has hired Seattle U’s associate head coach Joddie gleason as the eighth women’s basketball coach.

• Also, interim president of the school David may recommended on Friday that the EWU stay in NCAA Division I and also stay in the Big Sky conference. May’s recommendation was directed to the school’s board, which is expected to make the final decision in June.

Seaplanes

• According to media reports on the Tri-Cities, the Columbia Cup, scheduled for July 23-25, is back on the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane race calendar. It was previously canceled due to COVID protocols.
